A new retirement lifestyle in U City’s thriving community
Retirement residents at Uniting Communities’ new U City building on Franklin Street are making the most of vibrant city living – top-notch dining options in every direction, the Adelaide Central Market within easy walking distance, and ready access to public transport, as well as theatre, concerts and sporting events.
But they’re also discovering all that’s on offer within the walls of U City, from the new Luigi Delicatessen on the ground floor to the Club Lounge on level 13 to the gym facilities.
Vincent and Josephine have been living in the building’s Retirement Residences, located on the upper floors of U City, since late 2019.
The couple is embracing the opportunity to get to know other residents, connecting through the Club Lounge.
‘Some residents have started up cheese and wine evenings in the Lounge and we’re planning to have a barbeque soon,’ says Vincent. ‘We often meet with others there – in January, many of us got together to watch part of the city stage of the Tour Down Under from the balcony. We’ve made some wonderful friendships already.’
They’re also enjoying the confidence that comes with having 24/7 access to the Concierge team, and regular contact with the Village Manager.
‘We’re loving the independence here,’ Josephine says. ‘But one of the best aspects of this kind of retirement living is knowing that the Concierge is there 24/7 if we need them. It’s given us reassurance that we have back-up in the event of an emergency – we’re not alone.’
‘The Village Manager and the whole team here have been so supportive and helpful,’ adds Vincent. ‘They’ve been available to answer any questions or to help with matters in our home. They know the place and the residents very well.’
With dental and other service options available in the building, as well as gym facilities and fitness classes, good health and wellbeing is also front of mind.
Says Josephine, ‘I’ve been down to the gym for a look and hope to start using it soon. I know some of the other residents are heading down to use the equipment or attend the fitness classes. It’s handy to have these kind of services right here in the building.’
For Vincent, the opening of Luigi Delicatessen on the ground floor has been a particularly exciting addition to the U City community.
‘It’s really brought the ground floor to life,’ he says. ‘We’ve been down there quite a bit for coffee and to chat with Luigi. We’re so excited about the restaurant opening soon.
‘This building is really creating its own village ‘feel’.’
